Antonio Conte admitted to Sky Sports that he didn’t believe Chelsea had a chance of winning the title in his first season in English football. It seems even the former Juventus and Italy manager was surprised by the Blues’ form this season.
After securing the Premier League title with time to spare, Conte has the chance at a fantastic league and cup double when Chelsea take on Arsenal at Wembley Stadium on Saturday afternoon. That would be a tremendous achievement in his first year at Chelsea but it could prove to be to be the final straw for Arsene Wenger.
The criticism of Wenger has reached record levels this season and the Frenchman is in dire need of cup success to give him something to defend. He knows exactly what it takes to win the FA Cup having guided Arsenal to cup glory in two of the last three seasons but Chelsea are much the better side and defeat in the cup final added to the lack of Champions League football next season could spell the end for Wenger.
Chelsea 3/4 (Sky Bet)
Draw 11/4 (Paddy Power)
Arsenal 19/5 (Ladbrokes)
By making Chelsea the odds on favourites to win the match inside 90 minutes it’s clear the bookies believe Arsenal need to be at their very best. It’s unlikely that they will be.
Wenger has been let down by his players on more than one occasion this season and Laurent Koscielny was the most recent Arsenal player to leave his manager in the lurch. The French centre-back was sent off for a reckless challenge on Everton’s Enner Valencia in the last game of the season. That rush of blood to the head cost Arsenal perhaps their best centre-back at a time when they are already struggling with injury in the heart of the defence.
Arsenal have looked much better since switching to a three man defence but without Koscielny they will struggle to keep this rampant Chelsea at bay. The Blues put five past Sunderland and with a clean bill of health in attacking positions they should be able to score multiple times against the Gunners.
Arsenal won’t go down without a fight but the 3/4 that Sky Bet are quoting on Chelsea to win looks like good value to us.
Draw 1-1 @ 13/2 (Betfair)
Chelsea 1-0 @ 7/1 (Paddy Power)
Chelsea 2-1 @ 8/1 (Sky Bet)
Chelsea 2-0 @ 17/2 (William Hill)
Draw 0-0 @ 11/1 (Coral)
Chelsea 3-1 @ 14/1 (William Hill)
The two recent finals that Arsenal played and were both thoroughly entertaining matches. They initially struggled against both Hull and Aston Villa and had to rely on their goalscoring prowess to get their hands on the cup. This time around, Wenger will need the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud to be in top form to have any chance of beating Chelsea.
Chelsea may have been the best side in England by a stretch this season but they did struggle to keep clean sheets in the final few months of the campaign. Arsenal actually had their best run of form at the end of the season and they should be able to break through the stubborn Chelsea resistance even if they don’t win.
So, if you’re having a correct score bet the 8/1 that Sky Bet are quoting on Chelsea winning 3-1 could well be worth a punt.
Diego Costa 3/1 (Bet365)
Michy Batshuayi 9/2 (Boylesports)
Eden Hazard 5/1 (Bet365)
Alexis Sanchez 7/1 (Bet365)
Olivier Giroud 7/1 (Boylesports)
Pedro 7/1 (Paddy Power)
Willian 9/1 (Ladbrokes)
Danny Welbeck 9/1 (Boylesports)
The main change for Chelsea next season is being able to cope with both the demands of European and domestic football. They’ll need big players to step up but their best attacking players have proven that is well within their capabilities in the season just finished.
When Diego Costa and Eden Hazard came off the bench in the FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham they changed the flow of the game. Those two will surely start against Arsenal and will receive a great deal of support in the First Goalscorer market. Both Costa and Hazard are capable of creating and scoring goals out of nothing but the best value first goalscorer option looks to be Pedro.
The Spaniard struggled to make an impact in his first season at Chelsea but he has emerged as a key player since Conte took over at the club. Pedro contributed nine goals and nine assists in the Premier League and has already scored four FA Cup goals. His pace and ability to score both inside and outside the box makes him look good value to score the game’s first goal at 7/1 with Paddy Power.
Chelsea to win at 3/4 with Sky Bet
Pedro to score first at 7/1 with Paddy Power
